Chongqing - "Mountain City"

Chongqing is located in the southeastern section of the Sichuan Basin where the Yangtze and Jialing rivers meet. It is the largest industrial and commercial city in southwestern China and the economic center of the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. It is a metropolis under the direct jurisdiction of the Central Government. Chongqing, also known as Yu, was established some 3,000 years ago. Renowned for its romantic mountains, rivers, and fog, Chongqing is an ideal spot for relaxation. The majority of the buildings in Chongqing are located on the hillsides and mountains surrounding the city. The climate in Chongqing is often cloudy and misty with an average annual precipitation of about l, 000 millimeters. As a consequence, it is also called the "City of Fog."

Chongqing has many places of interest in both its urban and rural regions. Traveling eastward along the Yangtze River, one can enjoy the magnificent Three Gorges. Every year from May through June, the Three Gorges International Travel Festival is held in Chongqing.

Dazu Grottoes is situated 105 miles west of downtown Chongqing. The Dazu Grottoes are another outstanding example of later Chinese grotto art. There are more than 100 cliff carvings containing 60,000 sculptures spread over 76 different places, all mainly related to Buddhism. The content and craftsmanship of these carvings are best at the Beishan and Baoding hills. The art of Dazu that emerged in the late Tang Dynasty (618- 907) and flourished in the Song Dynasty (960-1127) represents an important chapter in China's cultural and religious history.

Some of The Sights..........

Without doubt, Chongqing's "main interest" lies within the Yangtze River and it's world renowned Three Gorges and Three Gorges Dam. Ever since the decision was made to build the Three Gorges Dam, a cruise through the gorges has taken on a new perspective as many travelers realize that time is running out for experiencing one of the world's great natural wonders. Rising out of the Tangula Mountain in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the mighty Yangtze River twists and turns for about 3838 miles and empties into the East China Sea. The river is the longest in China and the third longest in the world after the Amazon and the Nile. It has always been a lifeline for transporting people, products and everyday supplies

Leshan Giant Buddha

The carving of this massive statue commenced in 713AD during the Tang dynasty and was only completed in 803AD. The Buddha overlooks the confluence of the Min, Qingyi and Dadu rivers just east of Leshan and is reputed to be the largest carved stone Buddha in the world. A local saying explains, "The mountain is a Buddha, the Buddha is a mountain".

Northen Hot Springs Park

Fifty kilometres northeast of Chongqing City, the scenic Northern Hot Springs Park is situated at the foot of Jinyun Mountain. The park is the site of a 5th century Buddhist Temple and covers an area of ten hectares with hot springs, caves, man-made rock formations and Buddhist Halls.

The natural spring water rises to a temperature of 32C (89.6F) and is renowned for it’s benefits in the treatment of Rheumatism, Arthritis and Muscular Pain.

Red Cliff Village

Red Cliff Village was established by the Chinese Communist Party as their headquarters during their World War II alliance with the Kuomintang against the Japanese.
All Chinese Communist Party representatives visiting or living in KMT controlled Chongqing stayed at Red Cliff Village. Zhou Enlai lived here for a number of years during the war and his room has been well preserved. Other noted “guests” were Mao Zedong and Chiang Kai Shek who spent 43 days in talks here during August 1945.

The Sleeping Buddha & Stone Carvings at Dazu

Dazu County, located in the southeast of Sichuan province, is 271 kilometres away from Chengdu and 163 kilometres away from Chongqing. "Dazu" here means "harvest and abundance (Dafeng, Dazu)".

The work of Dazu Rock Carvings began in the first year of Yonghui in the Tang Dynasty (650A.D.), and continued until the Ming and Qing dynasties. Now, it enjoys equal popularity with theYungang and Longmen Grottoes. The general term of "Dazu Rock Carvings" refers to all the cliffside carvings in Dazu County, which includes the carvings in Beishan (including Beita), Baodingshan, Nanshan, Shizhuanshan and Shimenshan. Baoding Grotto, 15 kilometres northeast of the county seat, is the largest and best preserved one and is a key cultural relic site under state protection.
